If your Vancouver home was built before 1985 and still has its original panel, you're likely on 60 or 100 amps. That was plenty when the biggest load was a stove — but between EVs, heat pumps, induction cooking, and hot tubs, most modern households need 200 amps to run comfortably without tripping breakers.

The 2026 price band (real numbers)

For a standard single-family Metro Vancouver upgrade — 60A/100A service to 200A, panel + meter base swap, permit and inspection — expect:

  • $3,900 – $5,200 on a straightforward job
  • $5,200 – $7,500 if the service mast, weather head, or grounding also need replacing
  • $8,000+ if BC Hydro has to disconnect and re-connect at the pole (rural / rear-lane properties)

Anyone quoting under $2,500 is usually skipping the permit — which will fail on resale disclosure and voids your home insurance if there's ever a fire.

Where the surprise costs come from

The three most common "sorry, this is going to be more" moments:

  1. Aluminum branch wiring discovered during the upgrade — requires pigtailing at every device.
  2. Service mast rot on older homes — BC Hydro won't reconnect to a damaged mast.
  3. Grounding electrode conductor doesn't meet current BCEC code — needs to be replaced during the upgrade.
